Every year the tennis club runs an internal ladder tournament for its members. It's a great way to find people to play against and it also decides positions for our annual club tournament. The ladder gets underway during term 1 so if you are interested in entering you need to log in and sign up on this page when signing up is open. The ladder is divided into two for different standards of play. The upper ladder is for team players and advanced players, while the lower ladder is for intermediate and beginner players. You select which ladder you wish to join when signing up. Starting positions are random when the ladder opens to encourage as much play as possible. If you sign up after the ladder is open you will be added at a random position in the bottom half of the ladder. If you find you are unlucky enough to be near the very bottom of the ladder don't worry! The ladder has been designed to allow people futher down to challenge more positions ahead enabling bigger jumps up the ladder. If you decide you don't want to take part in the ladder anymore you can retire. This, however, is irreversible and means that you cannot rejoin the ladder for this year. During term 2 we start the yearly club tournaments. Usually several tournaments are played in fields of 32 (depending on how big demand is). Which tournament you take part in depends on your position on the ladder. For example, the top tournament is made up of the players in the top 32 positions in the upper ladder. The next 32 are taken from the next players in the upper ladder and then the top of the lower ladder, and so on. Finally, if you missed out on getting into one of the university teams this year the ladder is a good way to try to prove yourself to the captains. You can see who is a team player on the Teams page and if you start beating them in the ladder then you will be noticed.

Here are the rules and procedures for this year's ladder tournament:
Making A Challenge
- When you challenge someone you must do it through the website. As part of submitting the challenge you send an email to the opponent. Any replies from them will go directly to your email inbox from which you can arrange a time and place to play.
- Depending on your position in the ladder you can only challenge a certain number of places ahead of you.

| 6 - 11 |

- You can only have one challenge on the go at a time. This means you won't be able to challenge someone if they have a match outstanding. Similarly, you won't be able to challenge anyone if you have a match outstanding (either from someone challenging you or you challenging someone else). You can request to be notified by email when someone has completed their match by clicking 'Notify When Free' next to their name on the ladder.
- Once the challenge is sent the opponent has 3 days to log in and confirm that they are accepting the challenge otherwise the challenger will be able to select 'Walkover' for that match.Challengers must remember to log in and click 'Walkover' after 3 days if the match isn't confirmed.
- A challenge can be cancelled on the website at any time by the challenger. The opponent cannot cancel a challenge.
Playing The Match
- Matches should ideally be played within a week of the challenge being confirmed by the opponent otherwise an appeal can be made by email to Ollie or Mike (

) for a walkover (depending on circumstances). If matches are not completed within 2 weeks of the challenge being sent the match is likely to be removed from the system.
- You can play matches anywhere you like and you have the options of the Rootes courts, Westwood courts, courts in Leamington and in Coventry. University students can use the campus courts for free. To book a court call the sports centre reception on 024 765 23011 (extension 23011 from campus phones). Try to book well in advance (2 or 3 days). Bookings for the same day are difficult to make, especially for the Rootes Courts.
- Each match is best of 3 sets.
Submitting The Result
- The winner should submit the result as soon as possible after the match is finished by logging in and entering the result. If there are any disputes about a submitted result please contact Ollie or Mike (

).
- If a challenger beats someone above them or gets a walkover, the challenger takes the opponent's position in the ladder and the opponent moves down one place.
- You can't challenge someone within 2 days of last playing them.
